What is
Family Constellation Therapy?
Family Constellation Therapy, also known as Systemic Constellations or simply Constellations, is a therapeutic approach that aims to uncover and address hidden dynamics, unresolved issues, or patterns within an individual’s family system. Developed by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger in the 1990s, Family Constellation Therapy is based on the idea that unresolved traumas or emotional burdens from previous generations can influence a person’s well-being, relationships, and life choices.
During a Family Constellation session, the individual (seeker) who wants to explore a particular issue or concern will work with a facilitator (therapist) and a group of participants.
These participants represent family members or significant elements within the seeker’s family system. The facilitator guides the process as the seeker places the representatives in the room, intuitively arranging them to create a physical representation of their family system or internal map.
Once the constellation is set up, the facilitator observes the interactions and dynamics among the representatives, looking for any imbalances, entanglements, or unresolved issues. Through a series of guided interventions, such as role-playing, dialogue, or physical movements, the facilitator helps the seeker bring about a new understanding and resolution within the family system. The goal is to restore balance and harmony, allowing the seeker to gain insights, release emotional burdens, and experience personal growth.
Family Constellation Therapy can address a wide range of issues, including:
1. Relationship problems: By identifying and resolving underlying family patterns, individuals can improve their relationships with partners, parents, siblings, or children.
2. Emotional difficulties: Uncovering hidden family dynamics can help individuals better understand and heal from anxiety, depression, or other emotional issues.
